A Platform for Technological Exchange to Advance Busan’s Power Semiconductor Industry… “2025 Summer Conference of the Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic Material Engineers” Held

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the “2025 Summer Conference of the Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic Material Engineers (President Shin Hoon-gyu)” is being held from June 18 to 20 at the BEXCO Convention Hall.

The summer conference is an annual academic event organized by the Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic Material Engineers (KIEEME), the leading academic society in Korea specializing in compound power semiconductors and electrical/electronic materials.

○ Founded in 1987, KIEEME is a core institution in the research of compound power semiconductor materials such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN). The society is composed of over 6,000 members including top experts and institutional representatives in the field.

After Busan was designated a specialized power semiconductor cluster in 2023, the city successfully attracted the conference to Busan in 2024 to strengthen the connection between research and industrial technology development and to facilitate the stable settlement of the industry.

○ This year’s conference is expected to create synergy with the upcoming “2025 International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICSCRM),” scheduled to be held in Busan in September—the first time in Korea—further advancing collaborative frameworks among local industry, academia, research institutes, and government.

The 2025 conference is the largest ever, with over 1,700 participants including experts and industry professionals presenting 800 academic papers on the latest in power semiconductor technology and research.

○ Participants will engage in knowledge sharing on cutting-edge semiconductor technologies and explore strategies to foster the power semiconductor industry in Busan.

Over the three-day event, a variety of academic programs will take place, including:
▲ 800 presentations on advanced industries such as power semiconductors and materials/processes
▲ Job and technology sessions featuring 39 industry-academia-research institutions
▲ Special lectures
▲ Student-focused sessions

○ Special lectures will include:

• ●Dr. Seo Hee-seon, Director of the Agency for Defense Development, on “The Evolution of Marine Detection Technology Driven by Materials Innovation”

• ●Dr. Baek Seung-wook, Director at the National Research Foundation of Korea, on “Quantum Rendezvous: From Science to Technology”

○ Additionally, 39 promotional exhibition booths from participating institutions will be set up along with a stamp tour event for visitors.

Notably, concurrent events will include the “SiC Semiconductor Materials and Devices Conference” and the “Specialized Workshop of the Korean Gallium Oxide Technology Research Society,” contributing to strategies for Busan’s power semiconductor industry development.

Park Dong-seok, Director-General of the Advanced Industry Bureau of Busan, stated, “The city is actively pursuing a comprehensive strategy centered on the power semiconductor cluster, encompassing cluster development, workforce training, and infrastructure expansion.” He added, “Held ahead of the upcoming ICSCRM in September, this summer conference is expected to serve as a pivotal step toward establishing Busan as a central hub for technological exchange and cooperation in the power semiconductor sector.”
