“Busan University Students Safeguard Local Communities!”… Busan Launches Pilot Operation of the “University Student Safety Supporters” Program

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it is currently recruiting Pusan National University students to serve as “University Student Safety Supporters” as part of a pilot program launched this June.

○ Busan ranks second nationwide after Seoul in terms of the number of universities (22) and student population (approximately 200,000). This program was designed to effectively link students’ high levels of activity with local safety efforts.

○ Initially, the city is operating the pilot program exclusively for Pusan National University students. Since June 11, applications have been accepted on a rolling basis through the university’s promotional channels.

“University Student Safety Supporters” will be responsible for:
▲ Reporting daily safety hazards via the “Safety Sinmungo” app
▲ Identifying safety risks on and off campus
▲ Promoting safety awareness through online platforms
▲ Participating in safety training sessions

○ Students will actively identify hidden hazards in accident-prone areas on campus and around nearby nightlife venues. They will also promote safety online through Busan’s safety-focused social media account “SafeHiSo,” contributing to a multi-faceted culture of safety.

Participating students will receive various benefits including:
▲ Volunteer hours based on activity time
▲ Extracurricular mileage points
▲ Mayor’s commendation
▲ Opportunities to participate in national-level safety events

○ To further encourage enthusiastic participation, extracurricular mileage points will be awarded differentially based on performance. These points are part of the university’s extracurricular program and are considered a favorable factor in scholarship selection.

○ Additionally, top-performing supporters will be given priority for the mayor’s commendation, and they will also be recommended for participation in central government safety events and awards—recognizing their dedication to the community.

Pusan National University students wishing to participate in the pilot “University Student Safety Supporters” program can apply using the QR code on the recruitment poster.

Meanwhile, the city plans to brand and foster this program as a long-term, flagship youth safety initiative rather than a one-time event.

○ After the pilot phase, the city will conduct a detailed analysis of the program’s effectiveness and stability. Leveraging the rich student resources of local universities, the program is expected to gradually expand to other institutions across Busan.

Kim Ki-hwan, Director General of the Citizen Safety Office, stated, “The University Student Safety Supporters program will be a meaningful initiative where youth voluntarily contribute to regional safety. We hope this will enhance future generations’ safety awareness and serve as a catalyst for expanding citizen-led safety governance.”
