Maritime Capital Busan Successfully Hosts “Our Ocean, Our Action” Marine Environment Campaign with Citizens

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that, in partnership with BNK Busan Bank, it successfully hosted the “Our Ocean, Our Action” marine environment campaign at Songdo Beach on June 7.

This campaign was held as a citizen-led initiative in line with the slogan of the “10th Our Ocean Conference (OOC)” — “Our Ocean, Our Action” — and symbolized the citizens of Busan taking voluntary action to grow together with the sea.

On the day of the event, more than 1,200 citizens voluntarily gathered to participate in beach cleaning (beachcombing), carefully collecting trash washed ashore, and actively engaged in ▲eco-friendly experiences ▲a seashell treasure hunt ▲a marine environment OX quiz, and more, deepening their understanding of marine protection.

○ The event was well-received thanks to the inclusion of various family-friendly programs, allowing children to participate alongside adults.

○ In addition, a “Safe Seafood Campaign” was held to promote the safety and consumption of local seafood products.

The campaign was also held to celebrate World Oceans Day (June 8), highlight the achievements of the “10th Our Ocean Conference (OOC)” held in Busan this April, and gather public support for hosting the “4th UN Ocean Conference (UNOC)” in 2028.

○ Since 2014, the City of Busan has been submitting and fulfilling voluntary marine protection commitments as the first local government to do so for three consecutive years at the high-level international conference “Our Ocean Conference (OOC).”

○ Building on the success of the “Our Ocean Conference (OOC),” the City has already secured the hosting rights for the “2026 PNLG Forum (Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia Local Government Network),” and will actively pursue hosting the “4th UN Ocean Conference (UNOC)” in Busan should Korea be selected, aiming to establish Busan as a central hub for international marine conferences.

Shim Sung-tae, Director-General of the Bureau of Maritime Affairs, Agriculture, and Fisheries of Busan, stated,
“This campaign was a citizen-driven event involving the city, a local bank, and residents, enabling citizens to enhance their awareness of marine protection and reaffirm their commitment to sustainable ocean conservation.”
He added, “Busan will continue striving to build a vibrant marine culture together with its citizens.”
