Summer Natural Disaster Response Period Begins – On-site Readiness Inspections to Address Extreme Weather

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that on the afternoon of June 9, Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs Lee Joon-seung will personally visit disaster-prone areas including the disaster prevention project at Myeongjang Park, the Dongcheon seawater drainage pipeline improvement site, and the Jaseongdae No. 1 and 2 pumping stations to inspect summer disaster readiness at key sites.

Background

With the official summer natural disaster response period beginning on May 15, this on-site inspection will verify the effectiveness of the city’s prior preparations and ensure that countermeasures are functioning properly at the ground level.

Busan has entered the summer disaster response period with the goal of achieving zero casualties through focused management of five major risk categories. A comprehensive disaster countermeasure plan was established and activated as of May 15.

On May 14, Mayor Park held a city-wide disaster preparedness meeting with department heads, district and county officials, and relevant agencies to review and strengthen implementation plans for this year’s seasonal disaster response.

2025 Response Focus

This year’s response plan has been expanded to include large-scale construction sites and coastal facilities, in addition to last year’s key risk types:

The city is strengthening proactive risk response systems, expanding risk area identification, and improving disaster prevention infrastructure to mitigate hazards before disasters strike.

On-site Inspection Details (June 9, 14:00)

1. Myeongjang Park (Disaster Prevention Project Site)
This site was part of a suspended private park development project. In April, the city proactively allocated emergency funds for disaster prevention due to summer flood concerns. The Vice Mayor will inspect drainage facilities and emphasize strict safety monitoring to prevent any potential casualties.

2. Dongcheon Seawater Drainage Pipeline Improvement Site
The Vice Mayor will check for flow obstructions in the waterway and confirm removal of temporary cofferdams installed during dredging. He will also inspect safety measures at the site. Districts Dong-gu and Nam-gu have been asked to prepare evacuation plans and implement access control measures in flood-prone areas during extreme weather.

3. Jaseongdae No.1 and No.2 Pumping Stations
A review of the operational status of drainage pumps and water gates will be conducted to ensure immediate response capabilities in case of emergencies.
