Busan City Initiates Research Project to Establish Strategic Plan for Fostering the Nuclear Industry

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it has launched a research project to establish a comprehensive strategic plan to foster the nuclear industry. This move is part of the city's proactive response to the resurgence of the nuclear ecosystem and the strengthening of export support policies.

In recent years, the city has carried out various support initiatives to build the nuclear industrial ecosystem, including:

• ●Establishing the Korea Institute of Nuclear Environmental Restoration

• ●Creating a support center for auxiliary equipment manufacturing for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)

• ●Building a local foundation for the nuclear industry

• ●Participating in the University of Energy Technology Sharing Program

Recognizing the need for systematic and coherent nuclear industry policy development, the city enacted the Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of the Nuclear Industry in Busan Metropolitan City in August 2024. This ordinance provided a legal basis for the formulation of the development plan. The city subsequently allocated budget funds and completed administrative procedures for project operator selection.

The Busan Institute and the Korea Nuclear Equipment Industry Association have been selected as joint operators of the project.

The project period is seven months, from May to December 2025. A kickoff meeting is scheduled for June, followed by an interim report in September and a final report in November. Once completed in December, the results will serve as a comprehensive five-year guide for the development of Busan’s nuclear industry.

Kim Ki-hwan, Director-General of the Busan Citizens' Safety Office, stated,

“Through this research, we aim to establish Busan as a strategic focal point for entering the global nuclear market and as a central hub for completing the full nuclear energy cycle.
We will continue exploring ways to support the advancement of the nuclear industry and spare no effort in assisting local nuclear companies to become leaders in the field.”
