Busan Holds Ceremony for ‘365 Fishing Vessel Safety Plus Kit’ Distribution – Follow-up to Vessel Accident Prevention Plan

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold a ceremony for the distribution of the 365 Fishing Vessel Safety Plus Kit at 3:00 p.m. today (June 2) in the Mayor’s Protocol Office at City Hall.

○ The event will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon and representatives of local fisheries cooperatives, including Moon Yong-hwan, President of the Gijang Fisheries Cooperative.

This ceremony is a follow-up to the Implementation Plan for the Prevention of Marine Vessel (Fishing Vessel) Accidents, which was established earlier this year. The purpose is to distribute the completed 365 Fishing Vessel Safety Plus Kits to six local fisheries cooperatives:

Gijang Fisheries Cooperative, Large Pair Trawl Fisheries Cooperative, Large Purse Seine Fisheries Cooperative, Bukyung New Port Fisheries Cooperative, Busan Fisheries Cooperative, and Southwest District Pair Trawl Fisheries Cooperative.

The kits include phosphorescent fishing vessel safety and health signage with multilingual labeling (Korean/English/Vietnamese/Indonesian) and non-shutdown live-line electrical cleaner. The goal is to prevent accidents during operations and reduce fire risks. A total of 2,364 coastal and nearshore vessels in Busan that submitted demand surveys will receive the kits.

○ The safety signage is intended to be placed in onboard work areas to raise awareness of safety practices among crew members. The non-shutdown electrical cleaner helps reduce the risk of fire caused by dust and other factors.

At the ceremony, Mayor Park is expected to state, “Because fishing vessel accidents are directly tied to human lives, thorough prevention is crucial. Only when fishing vessels are safe can Busan’s fisheries industry grow,” and add, “I sincerely ask for active cooperation from both public agencies and private actors, including fishermen and cooperatives, to build a safe fishing environment together.”

Meanwhile, the city is allocating KRW 700 million in national and municipal funds through the second supplementary budget to distribute life jackets to all fishing crew members in Busan. Additionally, the city plans to gradually implement accident prevention measures that utilize advanced technologies, including the installation of AI-powered black boxes and automatic fire suppression systems for small fishing vessels.
