Busan to Provide One-Year Free Pet Insurance for Adopted Stray Dogs – Coverage Includes Illness, Injury, and Liability up to KRW 10 Million

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced the launch of the “Stray Animal Pet Insurance Support Program,” offering one-year free pet insurance for families adopting stray dogs.

• ●The program aims to ease concerns about illness, injury, or accidents involving adopted dogs, and reduce the financial burden associated with adoption, thereby promoting more active adoption of stray animals.

Under this program, the pet insurance will cover 70% of medical expenses for surgery, hospitalization, or outpatient treatment resulting from injury or illness — up to KRW 10 million per year.

• ●Additionally, the insurance includes liability coverage of up to KRW 10 million for any damages the adopted dog may cause to other people or their pets.

Eligible applicants include citizens who have adopted stray dogs after January 1, 2025, from any of the six district-designated animal shelters or two adoption centers in Busan and have completed microchip registration.

• ●The six district-designated animal shelters are:
  ▲ Busan Animal Protection Center
  ▲ Korea Abandoned Animal and Animal Protection Management Association
  ▲ Eastern Abandoned Animal Protection Association
  ▲ Cheongjo Animal Hospital
  ▲ White Dove (Hayan Bidulgi) Association
  ▲ Dong-gu General Animal Hospital

• ●The two adoption centers are:
  ▲ Busan Companion Animal Welfare & Culture Center
  ▲ Haeundae District Stray Animal Adoption Center

Applications can be submitted in person at the designated shelters or adoption centers where the animal was adopted, or through the QR code on promotional materials, or by calling the dedicated pet insurance call center (☎ 1660-1621). Applications will close once the budget is exhausted.

• ●The insurance is valid for one year from the date of enrollment.

Ahn Cheol-soo, Director of Busan’s Green City Bureau, stated, “We hope this pet insurance program will help reduce the burden on adopters and lead to more stray animals finding loving families. We encourage citizens to show interest in adopting stray animals, and we will continue our efforts to foster a responsible pet ownership culture in Busan.”
