Busan Cinema Center Transformed into a Sentimental Garden! Opening of “BIFF-FOREST” Indoor Garden

The Green City Development Office of Busan Metropolitan City announced that it will open the “BIFF-FOREST” indoor garden (hereinafter referred to as “indoor garden”) inside the Busan Cinema Center tomorrow (May 22).

Located within the symbolic cultural space of the Busan Cinema Center, the indoor garden creatively embodies the identity of Busan’s natural and urban landscapes, offering a new rest space where culture and nature harmoniously coexist.

Under the theme “BIFF-FOREST,” the indoor garden features two symbolic spaces: the “Breathing Vertical Garden,” the tallest indoor vertical garden in Busan at 8 meters high, and the “Forest of the Sea,” inspired by the scenic view of Haeundae Beach and Jangsan as seen from the ocean.

○ Theme – BIFF-FOREST:
The name combines the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) with “forest,” expressing the hope that, just like a growing forest, the festival will continue to thrive and become the world’s leading film festival.

○ Breathing Vertical Garden:
The tallest vertical garden in Busan at 8 meters, featuring a large orange tree sculpture symbolizing the “Forest of Film.” At night, soft orange lighting illuminates the structure, making it a notable night-time attraction.

○ Forest of the Sea Garden:
Inspired by the view of Haeundae Beach and Jangsan from the sea, the garden includes silver-colored sand to evoke the image of Haeundae’s white sand beach. Soft ambient lighting at night enhances the mystical atmosphere, giving visitors the feeling of strolling through a “secret garden.”

The indoor garden project was guided by Busan’s General Designer, Professor Na Geon (Dongseo University, formerly of Hongik University), and was designed with a strong focus on both artistic value and aesthetic completeness. It is considered a representative example of urban greening achieved through close collaboration between the City and the Busan Cinema Center.

The project began with the design phase in 2024 and was implemented with funding support from the Korea Forest Service. The initiative was pursued to provide citizens with a special space where they can experience “nature within culture” in their daily lives.

Additionally, the indoor garden will feature a smart information system using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
○ Visitors can simply tap their smartphones on information signs within the garden to access various content, including the background of the garden’s creation, design concepts, plant details, and maintenance information.

Choi Woo-ho, Director of the Green City Development Office, stated:

“We hope that citizens and visitors to the Busan Cinema Center for movies and performances will enjoy a moment of peaceful rest in the BIFF-FOREST indoor garden — a small forest in the heart of the city where nature and culture meet.”
