Dongshin Paper Co., Ltd. Wins Grand Prize at the 26th Busan Green Environment Awards

The Busan Metropolitan City Government (Mayor Park Heong-joon) has announced the winners of the 26th Busan Green Environment Awards, the city’s highest honor in the environmental sector. The recipients are as follows:

▲ Busan Environmental Education Center (Green Organization category)
▲ Korea Technology Finance Corporation (Green Enterprise category)

Since 2000, Busan City has annually selected recipients of the Green Environment Awards to publicly recognize the efforts of individuals, organizations, and companies that have contributed to environmental conservation in the region. With 94 awards presented to date, the Busan Green Environment Awards have become the most prestigious environmental honors in the city.

Grand Prize: Dongshin Paper Co., Ltd.

Dongshin Paper Co., Ltd. (CEO Noh Eung-beom), the recipient of this year’s Grand Prize, is the first Korean company to be certified for producing eco-mark toilet paper made from recycled paper cups and milk cartons. The company also holds a patent for pulp production using milk cartons.

Located in the Jeonggwan Industrial Complex, Dongshin Paper is widely recognized for operating an eco-friendly factory equipped with solar power generation facilities and featuring on-site ecological parks and wetlands.

Notably, the company previously won the Grand Prize in 2010. Since then, it has remained actively engaged in environmental initiatives, including acquiring patented technologies and signing voluntary agreements with the Ministry of Environment. It has also made significant contributions to society by supporting social enterprises in the environmental sector, partnering with the Korea Rehabilitation Agency, and participating in the Busan Local Enterprise Support Network. These efforts earned high praise from the award committee.

Green Family Category: Ko Sung-hoon

Ko Sung-hoon, President of the Environmental Protection Movement Association, was selected in the Green Family category. Since 2016, he has organized the "Beautiful Busan, Love for Dongcheon" walking festival.

He has also led regular river and coastal cleanups and events for “Nakdong River Love Month,” including essay and drawing contests, striving to enhance public awareness and engagement in environmental conservation.

Green Organization Category: Busan Environmental Education Center

In the Green Organization category, the Busan Environmental Education Center (Director Jeong Ho-seon) was selected for its leadership in regional environmental education.

Established in 2010, the center specializes in training environmental education instructors and operating multiple exemplary environmental education programs designated by the Ministry of Environment. It is committed to nurturing ecologically responsible citizens.

The center has also been entrusted with managing the Hakseong Climate Change Experience Center under the Office of Education and has been designated as the Environmental Education Center for Dong-gu District since 2021, where it provides tailored education programs for local residents.

Green Enterprise Category: Korea Technology Finance Corporation

The Green Enterprise award goes to Korea Technology Finance Corporation (President Kim Jong-ho), which supports climate tech companies through climate environment guarantees and carbon value assessment guarantees.

Headquartered in Busan, this policy finance institution has developed a carbon value evaluation model and a K-Taxonomy compliance assessment system. It is currently implementing a project to provide zero-interest financing for Busan-based climate technology enterprises. Through these initiatives, the corporation is actively fostering environmental technology and industry.

Taxonomy: A standardized, systematic classification based on traditional taxonomy. The term is derived from the Greek words ‘tassein’ (to classify) and ‘nomos’ (law or science).

The award ceremony will take place on June 5 during the 30th Environment Day Commemoration Ceremony. The Mayor of Busan will present plaques to the recipients.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Dongshin Paper Co., Ltd. has been selected once again as the Grand Prize recipient of the Busan Green Environment Awards, following its previous win in 2010. This demonstrates how the award motivates continued environmental action.” He added, “I urge all citizens, organizations, and companies to remain actively engaged in our efforts to build a low-carbon green city.”
