Busan Pledges Full Commitment to Food Safety

Mayor Park Heong-joon of Busan Metropolitan City announced that the 24th Food Safety Day commemorative event was held on May 14 in collaboration with the Busan Regional Office of Food and Drug Safety at the main conference hall of City Hall.

The event aimed to raise public awareness of food safety and enhance local hygiene standards in preparation for the upcoming 106th National Sports Festival and the 45th National Para Games, both to be held in October.

Approximately 170 participants, including consumer groups, food safety professionals, public officials, and citizens, gathered to reaffirm their commitment to food safety.

During the ceremony:
□ 26 individuals were recognized for their contributions to food safety and food poisoning prevention with commendations from the Mayor of Busan and the Head of the Regional Office of Food and Drug Safety.
□ A food safety pledge was read aloud jointly by city officials, the Food and Drug Safety Office, and citizen representatives.

The pledge emphasized action plans for:
○ Providing safe meals
▲ Practicing self-regulated hygiene management
▲ Preventing food poisoning and establishing rapid response systems
▲ Promoting a kind and hygienic food culture in preparation for the National Sports Festival.

Additionally, a participatory promotional booth was set up in the 1st-floor lobby of City Hall and received a positive response.

○ Activities included food poisoning prevention simulations, healthy eating experiences, food QR labeling and nutritional information from child welfare meal service support centers, handwashing demonstrations, food culture improvement corners, and displays and tasting of Busan’s premium foods.

The exhibits offered practical information on proper hygiene product usage, foodborne illness prevention, and food radiation inspection systems.

Director Lee So-ra of the Citizens’ Health Bureau stated,
“This event served as a meaningful occasion where the public and private sectors reaffirmed the importance of food safety and pledged to establish a safe food environment ahead of the National Sports Festival. Moving forward, we will focus on strengthening scientific and systematic hygiene management in food delivery services, cafeterias, and traditional markets—areas closely connected to citizens’ daily lives. We will also work to improve food culture, prevent foodborne illnesses, and ensure the dietary safety of children to foster a healthier eating environment.”
