Lee Sang-yong, Team Leader of the Transportation Innovation Division, Passes the Professional Engineer (Traffic) Examination

The Busan Metropolitan City Government (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that Mr. Lee Sang-yong, Team Leader of the Transportation Policy Research Team, has become the first Busan city official to pass the Professional Engineer (Traffic) Examination—Korea’s highest-level national certification in the field of transportation.

○ Mr. Lee passed the first stage of the 135th Professional Engineer (Traffic) Examination conducted by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea on February 8, 2025, and received final notification of his successful result on May 9.

○ The Professional Engineer (Traffic) license is the highest-

level national technical qualification for transportation professionals, awarded to experts with advanced knowledge and practical experience in traffic engineering, traffic planning, traffic safety, and intelligent transport systems. Only about 14 certified engineers are currently active in Busan.

Mr. Lee has worked in Busan’s transportation sector since 2004, leading major initiatives such as ▲ the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, ▲ Korea’s first integrated public transit discount system, “Dongbaek Pass,” and ▲ the operation of Demand Responsive Transit (DRT), thereby developing a transit system tailored to the city's needs. Going forward, he is expected to play a key role in future mobility innovation, including ▲ big data-driven bus route restructuring and ▲ the development of “Connected-Hub Stations.”

Mr. Lee expressed his commitment by stating, “With the Professional Engineer (Traffic) certification, I will dedicate myself to advancing next-generation transportation policy research in Busan and strive to create a mobility environment that contributes to regional development and improves the quality of life for citizens.”
