The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the 53rd Parents’ Day Commemoration Ceremony today (May 8) at 10:00 a.m. in the City Hall Grand Auditorium.

○ Parents’ Day, originally established as Mother’s Day and renamed in 1973, is a commemorative day that honors the grace of parents and celebrates the traditional values of respect and filial piety toward parents, elders, and seniors.

○ Each year, the City hosts this commemorative event to reaffirm the meaning of filial piety and to express respect and gratitude to parents.

This year’s ceremony is themed “A Festival of Gratitude, Spreading Happiness” and includes a pre-ceremony performance, an awards presentation, commemorative speeches, and celebratory performances.

○ Approximately 700 participants will attend, including Mayor Park Heong-joon, Superintendent Kim Seok-jun, Moon Woo-taek (President of the Busan Chapter of the Korean Senior Citizens Association), award recipients and their families, and citizens.

During the event, the Mayor’s Award will be presented to five individuals who have demonstrated exemplary filial piety — such as caring for ailing parents, raising children with integrity, and operating senior welfare facilities safely — as well as two organizations that have contributed to the promotion and spread of filial culture.

○ As part of the celebration, children from the City Hall Daycare Center will perform a heartwarming choral and dance piece to honor parents.
In addition, a popular music performance by a vocal group will provide a joyful experience for seniors and all generations alike.

With sponsorship from BNK Busan Bank, commemorative gifts will be provided to attending seniors to express respect and appreciation.

In the City Hall lobby, a “Generational Harmony Art Exhibition” will be held to encourage intergenerational empathy and express warmth and care for elderly individuals living alone.

Mayor Park is expected to deliver the following message:
“The dedication of today’s award recipients to their families and communities is a vital force that sustains our society.
The happiness of our seniors is the happiness of all Busan, and that happiness will be passed on to future generations.
We will devote all our efforts to making Busan a city where seniors can engage with others, pursue learning and sharing, and rediscover their value.”
