The 49th Busan-Dongnae National Traditional Arts Competition to Be Held

The Busan Metropolitan City announced that the 49th Busan-Dongnae National Traditional Arts Competition will be held over two days, from June 21 to 22, at the Busan Folk Arts Center.

Hosted and organized by the Busan Folk Arts Preservation Association and sponsored by the city, the competition aims to promote the value of traditional arts, strengthen the characteristics of traditional dance and instrumental music at the national level, and expand the foundation of traditional arts by discovering and nurturing new talents and offering them opportunities for artistic growth.

The competition features two main categories: traditional dance and traditional instrumental music, with participants divided into the following five divisions: Master, General, Middle School, High School, and Rookie.

The Grand Prize winner in the Master Division will receive the Prime Minister’s Award and 5 million KRW in prize money.

The Excellence Prize winner will be awarded the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and 3 million KRW.

All other prize recipients will receive certificates and cash prizes.

In particular, the Master Division Grand Prize winner will also receive various benefits, such as invitations to perform and opportunities to offer cultural lectures at universities.

Applications will be accepted starting May 1 until June 19 at 17:00, and details can be found on the website of the Busan Folk Arts Preservation Association (www.busanminsok.or.kr) or by calling 051-555-0092.

Cho Yoo-jang, Director General of the Culture Bureau of Busan, stated:

“The National Traditional Arts Competition, held in Dongnae, a city rich in tradition, is a meaningful event that preserves and fosters our cultural heritage.
It also offers a great opportunity for citizens to enjoy traditional arts together, and for these traditions to be recognized as global cultural assets.”
