Inclined
elevators at Jwacheon-dong, Busan, built for the convenience of Sanbokdoro residents
and tourists, won the first prize in the 2017 EW Project of the Year Contest. Elevator
World (EW) is the magazine for the International Building Transportation
Industry.
Busan
City built the outdoor inclined elevators, unlike regular ones which are
usually built inside of buildings, at the hillside residential area in
Jwacheon-dong, as part of the urban regeneration project. The improvement of
the pedestrian environment and the easy accessibility for residents and
tourists were highly appreciated by EW.
EW
is a publishing company specializing in elevators and escalators, which was established
in 1953 in the United States and has expanded its business to India, Turkey and
China. EW has annually awarded
outstanding products built worldwide, including vertical elevators, inclined
elevators, and wheelchair lifts.
The
winning projects for the 2017 EW Project of the Year includes elevators at the
“Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre” in Melbourne, Australia; elevators at
the “The Denver Museum of Nature & Science” in Denver and the lift “Pasco
de la Reforma V-1504 Lux VPL” in Mexico City.
The
award ceremony for the winning project will be held next January and the
Elevator World Magazine January 2017 edition will publish the winning projects,
including the inclined elevators at Jwacheon-dong.
Two
inclined elevators were built on a demolished long stairway, which was divided
into two sections of 36 meters and 62 meters. Each elevator has a 900kg lift
capacity (about 30 people) and can travel at 60 meters per minute. Elevator users
can view Busan Port and Bukhangdaegyo Bridge through the glass of the elevator.
The elevators are equipped with heating, cooling, CCTV, and a safety system.
The
inclined elevators at Jwacheon-dong also received the Minster prize by the
Ministry of the Interior for administrative productivity improvements.
