Busan City was announced as the host of the eighth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of FEALAC (Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation) from May 23 to May 26, 2017 at Nurimaru APEC House and other locations around Busan.
FEALAC is the only multilateral inter-governmental consultative
mechanism between East Asia and Latin America that launched in 1999 and
composes 36 member states – 16 East Asian and 20 Latin American. The Republic
of Korea (ROK), chosen as the host country of the FEALAC Cyber Secretariat at
the fourth FEALAC Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in Japan in January 2010, has
since been tasked with operating it. It has also hosted the FEALAC Cyber
Secretariat workshop on an annual basis since 2011 to seek strategies for
FEALAC development and ways to step up cooperation between East Asia and Latin
America. The ROK has been serving as FEALAC’s regional coordinator for East
Asia from 2015 to 2017.
Busan City has successfully hosted international
conferences with its outstanding conference facilities to play host to events
like the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in 2011 and the
2014 ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit.
After hosting the 2014 ASEAN-Republic of Korea
Commemorative Summit, the FEALAC 2017 will be the biggest event the city has
hosted, with participation from about 600 government officials, including
foreign ministers and related ambassadors from 36 member countries.
