Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik sets new agenda
“Let the new year start an era of economic renaissance in Busan." Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik said as he laid out the city's agenda for the new year.
He announced that the city would experience a boost to the economy. Hur stressed this new resolution in his year-end speech at the Busan City Council in December, 2007.
"The economic environment in and around Busan will be tough, and we will have to face new challenges next year," he said in his speech. "The issue at stake is the economic development in this rapidly changing global environment."
He pointed out that Busan's economy has shown some weakness, but said it still boasts strength and potential. Armed with these advantages, he expects the city to make great economic headway in 2008.
Speaking about the direction of the city's operation, he said that it would concentrate its efforts to vitalize the local economy and improve the foundation for the city's economic development, dubbed "Economic renaissance" by Mayor Hur.
Outlined in his blueprint are the additions of industrial lots, development of multiple-purpose industrial complexes in existing industrial regions, intensive cultivation of strategic industries, and more support for research and development.
The mayor also unveiled plans to turn the Gangseo area, the center of logistics and transportation in the southeastern region, into a cutting-edge industrial logistics city. The development of the city is expected to provide Busan's economy with a new growth engine, he said.
Hur stressed that the prosperity or peril of a city depends on the choices it makes. "The citizens of Busan will enter an era of economic renaissance with their continuous efforts and endeavors."
