Busan City Government launched a project to transform Busan into a green city by planting 20.2 million trees across the city from 2008 until 2020. The 1.45 trillion won project is designed to expand green zones within the city and strengthen Busan’s bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Moreover, the project is meaningful in that it will help reduce Busan’s carbon footprint at a time when global warming has become a worldwide concern.
The green project is aiming to double the city’s green zone from 6% to 12% by 2020 so that Busan can become a more pleasant and greener city.
One-third of the total planting target will be met by the city government and the rest by private companies and citizens. Busan City plans to encourage developers to plant more trees when constructing industrial and apartment complexes and to encourage citizens to also participate in the tree-planting drive.
