Busan City held a lighting ceremony to celebrate the New Year on 17 December 2007 (5:30 p.m.) at the Fountain Square of the City Hall.
About 300 people participated in the ceremony to wish for the health and prosperity of all citizens and the development of the city. Among the participants were Mayor Hur Nam-sik, the President of the City Council, the Commissioner of the Police Agency, the Chairman of Busan Chamber of Commerce and the President of Pusan Bank, and Citizen Pride awardees, exemplary workers and volunteers as well.
The 15m tall and 2.6m wide tower in the center of the Square is decorated with about 8,000 light bulbs on 1,500 strings and shows the New Year’s messages in three languages: “새해 복 많이 받으십시오” in Korean on the front side of it, “Happy New Year” in English on the left, and “謹賀新年” in Chinese on the back.
A three-dimensional dragon figure can be seen for the first time on the tower pillars, and on the top, an LED board displays various New Years’ messages and the city’s vision.
The tower will be lit for the next 54 days until 8 February 2008 from sunset until 1:00 a.m., but will be illuminated throughout the night on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
