‘My favorite city is Busan. I want to return.’

Busan City’s YouTube promotion winners are Dace Lesinka (left) from Latvia and Xiao He en (right) from Taiwan. Both have said they are eager to see the Busan Fireworks Festival in October.

“Gamsa hamnida!” (Thank you). Although speaking Korean with a distinctly foreign accent, the voice was clearly from someone who was deeply moved.

It was Dace Lesinka, who lives in Riga, Latvia, winner of Busan City’s promotion on its YouTube site (www.youtube.com/DynamicBusan).

One winner from Europe and another from Asia, along with one guest each, will receive roundtrip tickets to Busan to participate in a familiarization tour of the city. Their entire schedule will be shown on YouTube.

Germany’s Lufthansa Airlines and China Airlines, which have direct flights to Busan, are sponsoring the promotion. The response was overwhelming. There were 170,000 hits on the YouTube event quiz video, “Where on earth is it?” from Aug. 1-20. Netizens from Ireland, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia and elsewhere sent long e-mails about their interest in Busan.

“I’ve traveled to 13 countries, including the U.K., France, Germany and the Netherlands, but my visit to Busan last year was the best,” said Lesinka. “Since then, I have fallen in love with Busan and I yearned to visit again.”  Lesinka, who works for the Riga City Council, is in charge of administering foreign film production in Lativa.

She came to Busan last year to participate in the Asia Film Market, and her visit had such an impact that she has even begun to learn Korean.

The other winner is Xiao He en from Taiwan. A self-confessed “Korea fanatic” who loves K-pop and Korean food, Xiao has visited the country more than 30 times. She is a travel writer, and says she wants to visit many cities and write about her travels.

“There are many interesting things happening in Busan in October. I want to be where the action is,” said Xiao. “I really want to visit Haeundae, Jagalchi Market to eat raw fish and also taste samgyeopsal (pork belly meat), and galbi (marinated beef). I am so looking forward to my trip.”

Lesinka and Xiao will visit Busan at the end of October because both are eager to see the Busan Fireworks Festival.

Busan City will film their Busan familiarization tour and upload the video on the city’s YouTube Web site in early November.

Lesinka and Xiao will also share their special trip to Busan on their local social networks.
