With its focus on collaboration, the Busan Biennale 2012 intends to create a forum for participation and communication, as opposed to discipline-based art education, aiming to establish an organic relationship between artworks and the audience.

The exhibition program that allows direct communication between artists and the audience reflects the direction that the Busan Biennale pursues and specific action plans to achieve the goal. This approach will realize true art education, in which artists and the recipients of art understand and communicate with each other, by allowing artists and the audience to collaborate and participate in the process of creating artworks.

The Busan Biennale 2012, under the theme of Garden of Learning, aims to realize the open and democratic process of learning on contemporary art, making the exhibition accessible and enjoyable to everyone.

The exhibition assumes that any citizen can be an expert of an artwork, and thus it opened the exhibition to the public from the participation phase. Learning Council, formed by voluntary participation of the public, is the backbone of the exhibition. The Council serves as a mediator between the individual artists and the public not familiar with contemporary art, while making various proposals on the Garden of Learning and reflecting it to the exhibition.

Artworks that demonstrate the exhibition theme in their concept or methods of work or that are important in the field of participatory art will be presented at the exhibition. To highlight the characteristics of the Biennale based on the city of Busan, artists have gained hands-on experience of the characteristics, culture, and environment of the city, based on which they get the idea of their works and produce them. Through the attempt to reestablish the educational agenda of museums, a fresh and creative exhibition space will be created for the Busan Biennale, in line with the overall direction of the exhibition.

For the main exhibition, artworks in line with the exhibition theme Garden of Learning, overall direction of the Biennale, and artists and art trends that should be revisited will be presented at Busan Museum of Art. There will also be a forum for communication among citizens, council members, and art educators along with a variety of educational programs which provide educational materials customized to each class and level of participators.

Special Exhibition is planned to provide young planners and artists, the future leaders of Korea’s contemporary art, with an opportunity to participate in the Biennale. The Special Exhibition will be organized jointly by 9 curators with 72 artists submitting about 130 artworks. This exhibition that will be a new forum for learning for the planners and artists will be held at Busan Cultural Center, Busanjin Station, and Gwangalli MeWorld.

On the sidelines of the main and special exhibitions, Gallery Festival and Biennale Urban Square will take place. Gallery Festival, to be held at 20 art galleries in Busan, will show each gallery’s interpretation of Garden of Learning. Biennale Urban Square aims to satisfy the cultural needs of Busan citizens and serve as a forum for communication with the public by offering public-friendly participatory pro grams. A variety of exciting programs will be offered with the participation of people from all walks of life. During the exhibition, Talk on Biennale, a communication forum with the audience comprising various kinds of lectures, and Play with Biennale, an event utilizing container booths which will encourage participation from the audience, will also take place at Busan Museum of Art, the Special Exhibition Hall, and Gwangalli.
