World class German University FAU opens first overseas branch in BJFEZ

Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) of Eerlangen-Nuremberg, a top ranking German university opened its doors at an inaugural ceremony on May 11th to be held at its Busan branch campus and Research Center for Bio-Chemical Engineering located in the Busan Techno Park within the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone.

FAU, located in Eerlangen and Nuremberg, Bavaria, was founded in 1742 in Bayreuth and moved to Eerlangen in 1743. With five faculties (26,600 students and 11,600 staff) the university has a long history of achievement.

It is a pioneer among German universities leading in research and teaching through pilot projects with industry leaders such as Siemens and Bayer and is widely reputed as a leader in the fields of Bio-Chemical Engineering.

FAU Busan with a total of 30.5 billion KRW up to 2013; with funding from FAU, the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy as well as Busan Metropolitan government will offer Masters programs in Bio-Engineering, in 8 fields, this September and recruit 50 students as freshmen.

The opening of the campus in the BJFEZ will serve as an anchor facility to encourage further clustering of more foreign universities and R&D centers into the FEZ. Further externalities will be the overall growth of FDI inflows and the diversification of both Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do's economy.
