City steps on cancer treatment accelerator

Construction of the radiological and medical science and  centum science park wraps up

 

Busan is becoming a key city for the treatment and research of cancer, which is the No. 1 cause of death in Korea.

On April 23, the city completed the construction of the Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Science at Jangan-eup, Gijang County, which will lead radio therapeutics research and cancer treatment. And on April 16, it completed the construction of the Haeundae Centum Science Park - a high-technology research center. These efforts have helped propel Busan into the top echelon in the cancer field. 

 

■ Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Science now complete

The Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Science was completed on April 23. The branch was built on 73,451 square meters of land and features a low-dose radioactive ray research center and 304 wards equipped with linear accelerators, cyber knives and advanced CT and MRI facilities. In the research field, the center will examine low-dose radioactive ray effects

and medical radioactive ray protection methods. The overall goal is to develop innovative equipment that combines IT, bio-technology and nano-technology. It will also play an important role in the future development of technology by studying and applying baryon accelerator methods. The Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Science is scheduled to open in July after operating for two or three months on a pilot basis.

 

■ All systems go for Haeundae Centum Science Park

Centum Science Park, which is expected to play a leading role in research and development in the region, officially opened on April 16. Prestigious companies from all over the world in the bio, animation, IT, computer graphic and new materials industries are slated to set up shop in the new park. The campus occupies 44,761 square meters of total floor area and includes a 23-story main building with four underground levels as well as an education research building. The modern building is an architectural wonder, featuring LED lighting and eye-popping design.
