Dr. Hamadoun Touré Appointed as Honorary Citizen of the City of Busan

Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Dr. Hamadoun Touré of Mali has been appointed as an honorary citizen of the City of Busan.

 

Busan Mayor, Hur Nam-sik, has bestowed honorary citizenship to Dr. Hamadoun who visited Busan, on October 22, 2013. The city hopes the move will help to promote the 19th Plenipotentiary Conference which is being held from October 20 until November 7, 2014, at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO).

 

Dr. Hamadoun said, “We will strive to prepare the ITU Secretary General for the best conference in its history and to actively promote the member countries’ participation worldwide.”

 

Dr. Hamadoun Touré was elected as ITU Secretary General in January 2007, and then re-elected for another four-year term in January 2011.

 

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the oldest of the intergovernmental organizations which have become specialized agencies of the United Nations. It was founded in Paris in 1865, as the International Telegraph Union and will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2015.
