Busan Jazz Festival Sep 22nd to 24th

The 2004 Busan Jazz Festival is being held for the first time and feature styles ranging from familiar jazz standards to swing, bebop, soul, free jazz, and fusion. Venues will range from the charm of the jazz club and the large-scale in a theater. It is hoped that the festival will enrich local pop music.

The first day’s theme is Blues Day- Blues Forever. Che Su-young, Korean blues guitarist, will perform the club, “Interplay,” in front of Busan National University on Wednesday 7:30 on the 22nd. She has played with an English band and her Eric Clapton-style guitar play is unique with its special trembling tones and expression of feeling.

The second day’s theme is Groove Day. Performances will take place at Monk on Thursday 7:30 on the 23rd. The club was named after the legendary pianist and composer Thelonious Monk and is in front of Gyeongseong University. The Kim Seong-gwan Trio and bass guitarist Rio will put the essence of New York salon jazz on display. Kim Seong-gwan studied in New York for over ten years and enthusiastically performs difficult bebop jazz, while Rio who lived in Paraguay and is well versed in Latin music plays rare bass solos.

The third day’s theme is Jazz Day-Take A Jazz Train. The Busan Jazz Orchestra (BJO) and Ungsan who is known as the Julie London of Korea will perform their passionate brand of jazz at the Busan Citizen’s Center on the 24th. Ungsan has a beautiful voice for blues, pop and RnB. BJO will give performs swing jazz with perfect jazz ensemble crossover standards, fusion and pop music. The fusion jazz band, T.O.I’s inspirational jazz-rock is expected as well.
