Asia's largest marine wholesale market opens

Handling 3,480 tons of marine products a day

Busan City has opened an international marine wholesale market on a trial basis this month prior to its full opening in August.

The market, located on a site of 19,089 square meters in Amnamdong, Seo District, has cost 209 billion won since construction started in 2001.

The market, known to be the largest in Asia, consists of seven buildings, including a four-story wholesale building where marine products are auctioned, a 12-story building for office workers and marine product inspectors, a refrigerating building where 25,000 tons of fish and other marine products are stored and 100 tons of ice are produced, a two-story building for keeping fish alive in water, a building treating sea and waste water that is two stories underground and a two-story parking lot. The market is capable of handling up to 600,000 tons of marine products (mainly fish) per year, compared to 200,000 tons at the Busan Cooperative Fish Market, currently the largest in Busan. The figure is far more than the 120,000 tons handled at Garak market in southeastern Seoul a year and the 98,000 tons at th e marine product market in Noryangjin, Seoul. It is also equipped with a quay accommodating oceangoing fishing vessels. The international marine products wholesale market, the largest in Asia, opens on a trial basis this month prior to its full opening in August at Gamcheon harbor in Busan.

The city is also ready to open a board of international marine products trade in tune to the opening of the new fish market.
