Hur Nam-sik to oversee city for another four years, reflecting his high popularity
Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik has been elected to serve a third term of four years, a testament to his successful tenure in the city’s top position.
The mayor participated in a simple inauguration event on July 1 at City Hall and then held a press conference with reporters. He then got right to work by visiting child care centers and organizations focused on creating jobs in the area.
About 1,000 people - including government institute heads, officials from the non-profit sector, citizens and public servants - attended the inauguration to lend their support to the popular mayor.
In his inauguration speech, Hur unveiled the slogan for his next four-year term: “크고 강한 부산”
His plan involves helping Busan rise to the ranks of the world’s premiere metropolitan areas and become more competitive with global cities in terms of business, the economy, tourism and quality of life.
“With the backing of Busan citizens, I have received the honor and responsibility that comes along with being elected the city’s mayor for a third term,” Hur said.
“As stated in the oath of office, I will do my best and devote myself to the welfare, improvement and development of Busan.”
Mayor Hur continued by saying that he is “deeply aware of the responsibility” he has to the city.
“I promise to continue pushing beneficial city policies and complete my responsibility to aid and spearhead the development of Busan,” he added.
Hur rode public transportation - including a bus and the subway - to City Hall for his inauguration, using it as an opportunity to speak directly with citizens and show his commitment to the environment.
When he arrived at the fountain at City Hall, Hur received a warm welcome from government officials and workers.
