Mackerel has been chosen as the symbolic fish for Busan City.
Busan City has decided to make the mackerel the symbolic fish of this marine fisheries city.
In making its decision, the city conducted polls of public officers, the citizens and a screening committee consisting of officials from the city council, academic societies, research centers, the fisheries cooperation association and the fisheries industry. The screening committee unanimously chose the mackerel.
The mackerel was chosen because its blue-back and silver-white belly symbolizes the city’s “dynamism”, its thick, strong fin conveys a “powerful” image, and the streamlined body signifies the “speediness” of this creative city.
In addition, the mackerel has long been closely connected with the joy and sorrows of fishing folk in the area, giving it a natural connection with the city’s heritage.
Busan City plans to make the mackerel the main brand at its fisheries markets, and to develop souvenirs and other products emblazoned with mackerels.
