Busan City government has announced that all 2,511 local buses in Busan, as well as 160 major bus stops will have wireless internet access by July 2012.

With the sharp rise in smartphone usage in recent years, this project aims to improve the use of public services – civil services, transportation and tourism information – through the public’s use of smartphones by providing a convenient and up-to-date public Wi-Fi network. Busan City and SK Telecom signed an MOU to establish a mobile internet infrastructure, so for this project the City is utilizing SK Telecom’s WiBro network service established city-wide.

For the first phase of the project, from August through the end of December 2011, wireless internet access will be available in 1,300 buses passing by Busan-based universities and 80 major bus stops. The second phase of the project will be implemented between next January and July to complete the project by installing Wi-Fi in the remaining 1,211 buses and 80 other major bus stops.

This project will give passengers greater access to information and will help to reduce citizens’ communication costs.

A city official said, “We are striving to build a high-tech, ‘smart’ Busan where wireless internet access is available throughout the city.”
