Busan will host the 2008 World Tourism Investment Summit (WTIS), one of the international conferences under the umbrella of the UN.

Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with President of the UN World Trade University (WTU) – an organizer of the WTIS. On this occasion, the WTU announced Busan city as a host city for the 2008 WTIS.

As part of the World Global Forum, a global public/private cooperative consulting body formed by a UN Resolution, the WTIS is a large-scale international conference designed to promote tourism investment. The 2008 summit, scheduled to be held in Bexco for four days at the end of October, is expected to generate a total of 6.1 billion Korean won in economic spin-offs including 2.1 billion won in direct economic impact.

About 700 participants from over 50 countries will include tourism ministers, representatives of international investment/development companies, governments, investment-related institutions, and tourism companies as well as academics and experts. It will present round table conferences, thematic workshops on tourism investment, investor relations along with a large-scale tourism investment fair.

As it is the globally recognized event, many international organizations will participate, while MIGA, WTTC, UNCTAD, UNDP, World Bank and IMF support the 2008 summit.
