To boost marine sports and revitalize the regional economy, Busan City will host the 2nd Busan Mayor’s Cup International Surfing Championships at Haeundae Beach from June 24 until 27.

The Surfing Championships are hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and organized by the Korea Surfing Association. About 400 surfers comprising 16 teams from 12 countries will compete in the Open (men & women), Longboard, Beginner (men & women), Group, Junior (elementary, middle school and high school) categories.

Surfing classes will be offered to Busan residents and visitors on June 24, 25 and 27. Those who would like to attend the surfing class, please register by calling the Korea Surfing Association at 051)746-3753. In addition, a variety of side events including a surfing photo contest, a photo zone and a musical performance will be held.

An official of the championships said, “Surfing is not a popular sport yet in Korea. However, Busan City has a good environment for surfing. Therefore, through these Championships, we will promote Haeundae Beach and Songjeong Beach as international surfing sites and cultivate talented surfers through a surfing academy which will open at Haeundae Beach this year.”
