A new baseball bat-shaped lighthouse built by the Busan Regional Marine Affairs and Port Office at the entrance to Chilam Harbor, in Gijang-gun, was inaugurated on November 25, 2010.

The lighthouse, along with a sculpture of a ball and a glove, was built to symbolize the importance of baseball to Busan, and to commemorate Korea’s first ever gold medal in Olympic baseball at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It is the work of Busan-based sculptor Park Jong-man. A display of photographs and autographs is located inside the lighthouse.

A number of characteristic lighthouses including ones representing the Jangseung (a Korean traditional totem pole placed at a village entrance), the World Cup, a lotus flower and an Olympic torch, have now been built in Gijang-gun County and have been well received by Busan citizens and tourists. As a part of the ‘City Lighthouse Imagineering Project’, the baseball bat-shaped lighthouse built this year follows on from the nursing bottle-shaped lighthouse unveiled at Seoam Port, Gijang-gun last September by the Busan Regional Marine Affairs and Port Office and the Busan Convention & Visitors Bureau.
