Business leaders of Republic of Korea picked the successful hosting of the 13th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum held in Busan last month as the most significant economic achievement of 2005, a local research institute said on Dec. 18.

In a recent CEO poll conducted from Dec. 12-16, the Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI) saw Korean CEOs select the APEC forum in Busan and the commercialization of the digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services as the two major accomplishments of this year.

SERI CEO Club has a membership of 4,428 from 1,503 companies as of January 2005. Manufacturing companies account for 50 percent, financial firms for 20 percent and services providers for 10 percent.

It said 26.7 percent of the respondents cited the successful hosting of the APEC forum as the most successful achievement of this year.

The institute said that 19.6 percent cited the launch of satellite-based DMB (S-DMB) and terrestrial-based DMB (T-DMB) services for the first time in the world as the most memorable accomplishment.

The S-DMB kicked off in Korea in May, and is followed by T-DMB which began this month free of charge. DMB enables people on the road to enjoy crystal-clear video, theater-quality audio and other data via in-vehicle terminals or on handheld gadgets like cell phones.

The institute said that 15.4 percent picked the demonstration of how WiBro, the nation's homegrown portable Internet, works and the development of Samsung Electronics' 16-giga-bite NAND flash memory chips, respectively, as another two economic triumphs.

In other economic and industrial leapfrogs, 10.4 percent cited the breach of $500 billion in trade with the rest of the world, with development of the world's largest 82-inch LCD (liquefied crystal display) television and 102-inch PDP (plasma display) television picked by 4.4 percent of the respondents.
