The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone (BJFEZ) plans to launch a series of investment road shows overseas as part of efforts to attract $1 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) this year.

The BJFEZ will kick off investment promotion activities in the United States early next month to encourage the U.S. information technology companies to invest in its newly-established science and industry complex, the organization authorities said on Friday.

It also plans to send a team of officials to Thailand and the United States late this month to hold meetings with international schools and hospitals operating there, and explore possibilities of setting up their operations in the BJFEZ.

The BJFEZ has so far attracted a total of $1.15 billion in FDI, established in March 2004 as part of the Korean government's effort to transform the nation into a financial, logistics and business hub for Northeast Asia.

Two other free economic zones were established in Gwangyang and Incheon.
