Fresh vegetables to be grown and donated to underprivileged people

Haeundae-gu has made a rooftop farm at one of its offices to provide a pleasant place for citizens to have a chance to experience urban farming.

The rooftop farm is an educational site of the 'Green Sharing Urban Agricultural School' which is run by the Global Civil Society Center. Currently, about 10 different vegetables including Chinese cabbage, green onions, lettuces, chicory and spinach are being grown on the farm.

The harvested vegetables will be used to make kimchi for underprivileged people.

The Green Sharing Urban Agricultural School helps urban farmers by teaching them urban farming techniques and environmentally friendly recycling.

In October, the school received the Grand Prize (from Busan) and Prize of Excellence (at the National level) for its ‘Local Brand Social Enterprise Job Project' promoted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

Haeundae-gu plans to promote home-visit urban farm schools to demonstrate urban farming in apartment projects next year. The district authority will distribute farming boxes to 30,000 households to encourage 30,000 budding urban farmers to help develop Haeundae into Korea's best urban farming city.
