Busan City has launched a ‘Public Bike System’ in the Haeundae New Town area to provide people with convenient rental bicycles intended for making short journeys in the Haeundae New Town area.
The City is test-running the public bike system around Haeundae New Town from October 25, the opening day of the ITS (Intelligence Transportation Systems) World Congress, until the end of the year. Citizens can use the public bike system from November 1 once the 17th ITS World Congress is over. The congress will be held from October 25 until 29 at the BEXCO.
Public bikes can be rented at one automated station nearby one’s home or working place and conveniently returned to another station near city metro or bus stops.
The Public Bike System is an environmentally friendly transportation system which utilizes bicycles as short distance transport modes and aims to reduce car use by connecting to the city’s metro, bus and neighborhood bus networks. Many of the most advanced cities around the world are currently operating such a system or are preparing to introduce one to promote citizens’ bicycle usage.
Busan City, in cooperation with Samsung SDS and BnGROTIS Inc. has installed 15 automated stations, 600 bicycle racks and 30 CCTVs (closed-circuit televisions), and is operating 300 public bicycles.
Anyone aged 16 or over can use the public bike system. To use the system, the riders first have to register as a member at http://u-bike.busan.go.kr (currently only in Korean), and then register their transportation card (Mybi or Hanaro Card) to use for the rental payment.
The public bicycles have a 7-speed transmission which makes it easier for riders to ride uphill, while the down tube-styled frame was chosen for the convenience of women and elderly riders.
During the test period, the rental fee will be free until the end of the year. From 2011, the rental fee will be free for the first one hour of usage, and will then cost 500 won for every 30 minutes. If the rider pays a 20,000 won annual membership fee or a 3,000 won monthly membership fee, then all other rental fees will be exempted.
