In
Gijang-gun, a traditional Korean sled riding area located near Cheolma Sports
Park, Yeongu-ri, Cheolma-myeon on some idle agricultural land where water
celery, a specialty of Gijang-gun has been harvested, is still open.
A
traditional Korean sled is made of a small wooden board with metal blades
attached to it. The rider kneels on top of the sled and moves forward using
pointed wooden sticks. It was the most popular winter activity for adults and
children on Korea’s frozen rivers, fields and paddies during the 1960s and
1970s. Today, indoor ice skating rinks and ski resorts have replaced
opportunities to enjoy riding the traditional Korean sled. Korean parents and
grandparents will now be able to bring back memories of their childhood and
share the fun of traditional Korean sledding with their own children and
grandchildren.
