The Green u-Port system developed and operated by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs received an e-Asia Award from a regional trade facilitation council on Nov. 5, the ministry said.

Korea's RTLS/USN-based Green u-Port system had been submitted for screening at the 27th meeting of the Asia Pacific Council for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (AFACT) held in New Delhi, India, from Nov. 3 to 7. It beat out competing products from Malaysia, India and Indonesia in the competition and grabbed the highest award in the field of trade facilitation.

AFACT is a regional organization launched to promote the commitment and development of trade facilitation, electronic business policies and activities in the Asia Pacific region, mainly focusing on those promoted by the United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business.

Korea's Green u-Port system is a high-end product made with such technologies as RFID, GPS and USN, and is composed of a real-time yard-tracker, an automated terminal logistics system, a detector for hazardous material and more.

Such a system was first installed in two Busan port facilities in 2008, and fourteen more will be built at nationwide ports by 2012, the land ministry said.

The system is expected to decrease loading and unloading time at each port by 4 hours and 24 minutes and to drop annual carbon gas emissions by 170,000 tons, said the ministry.
