The “Hi-Pass” electronic toll collection (ETC) system was introduced at Baekyang Tunnel from December 1.

Baekyang Tunnel, built by private capital, connects the downtown area with the West Busan area. About 70,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel every day. Vehicles stopping to pay the tolls by cash or transportation card at the tunnel’s toll booths have led to chronic traffic congestion during rush hours and weekends.

To help ease the situation, Busan City and Baekyang Tunnel Ltd. have now installed the Hi-Pass system at the left-side tollgate in both directions, at a cost of 1 billion won. Toll charges are 400 won for sub-compact vehicles, 800 won for compact vehicles and 1,100 won for vehicles with a loading capacity of more than 2.5 tons.

The city expects the Hi-Pass system at Baekyang Tunnel will help to solve congestion, as currently 32 percent of all registered vehicles in Busan are equipped with the Hi-Pass system.

Baekyang Tunnel Ltd. plans to expand the number of Hi-Pass lanes as usage increases over time.
