The rooftop of the City Hall is being transformed into a green and beautiful garden.

As part of the City Green project, a 1,612 square meter rooftop garden has been built on the 4th floor roof of the City Hall building following a total investment of 0.4 billion won since June 2009. The garden consists of 2,174 trees of 35 different species and 1,330 flowers of 64 different species. A wetland pond for a wider experience of nature, a 157 square meter lawn and a 246 square meter wooden deck and benches have also been added, to make the garden a comfortable resting place.

The garden is named ‘Haneul Madang’, as a result of a survey conducted among 1,700 respondents including civil servants, and will be opened to the public next month when construction is complete. Registration, however, will be required.

As part of the rooftop gardening project to expand the insufficient amount of urban green space, the garden currently covers 17 percent of the 9,396 total area of the rooftop.

The City Hall rooftop garden will eventually cover the entire rooftop by 2012 and the city is encouraging others to build rooftop gardens on other private buildings in Busan.
