Busan City, and Geoje City and Gimhae City in Gyeongnam, will soon effectively come to be considered as extensions of each other, with the opening of new and rapid transportation links. The Geoga Bridge connecting Busan to Geoje in just 40 minutes and the Light Rail Transit connecting Busan to Gimhae in 30 minutes are both in the final stages of construction.
The Geoga Bridge (8.2 km), connecting Gadeokdo in Busan with Jangmok in Geoje, is a massive combined bridge and tunnel project now 88% complete. This week, the 17th of 18 tunnel sections is being installed, leaving the last one to be installed in the middle of May. Meanwhile, the main span of the bridge is also about to be finished. The construction site was opened to the press on April 14th, and the entire fixed-link project is due to be opened to traffic in December.
The opening of the Geoga Bridge will reduce travel time between Busan and Geoje by car to just 40 minutes, from the current 2 hours and 10 minutes.
The Busan–Gimhae Light Rail Transit has a total of 21 stations from Sasang Station in Busan via Gimhae International Airport to Kaya University Station in Gimhae. This project is also 88% complete, and the light rail track and civil works at each station have almost been completed. Test operation of the trains began on March 30.
The Busan – Gimhae Light Rail Transit is scheduled to open next April.
The opening of the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit will reduce the travel time between Sasang Station in Busan and Gaya University Station in Gimhae to just 38 minutes, from the current 1 hour and 10 minutes. Easy transfer to Busan Metro Lines 2 and 3 will provide greater convenience for those traveling regularly between the two cities.
