Major public agencies coming to Busan

Construction starts in 2008

Some 12 major public institutions will pull up their roots and move here, with construction to begin in 2008 and finish by 2012.

Three areas of Busan will host the institutions: the Dongsam area for the maritime industry & fisheries; the Munhyeon area for finance and others; and the Centum area for film.

Residential sites to support these major institutions will be constructed in two areas of the former site of the Republic of Korea Army Logistics Command at Daeyeon-dong and Gangseo new town, part of Busan city‘s recently-announced master plan to build a Busan Reformation Area.

According to the general plan, a 710,000-square-meter site at Dongsam-dong, Yeongdo district will house the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute, the Korea Maritime Institute, the National Oceanographic Research Institute and the National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service.  The area already has related organizations such as Korea Maritime University, the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology, the Maritime Museum and the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute.

Busan will develop the area into a world-class, high-tech locale in the maritime and fishing industries by constructing as an eco-friendly and open city park.

A finance and office cluster in Munhyeon-dong measuring 112,750 square meters will house the Korea Asset Management Corporation, the Korea Housing Finance Corporation, the Korea Securities Depository, Korea Housing Guarantee Co. Ltd., Korea  Southern Power Co. Ltd. and the Korea Youth Counseling Institute. Busan city plans to build a landmark building and add a flavor of international finance to the area, so that it will play a pivotal role in the southeast economic bloc of the country.

A 10,130 square-meter site in the Centum area, which will be developed as a film and media cluster, will include the Korean Film Council and the Korea Media Rating Board (Korea's game rating board).
