The government announced Monday its intent to boost the domestic maritime tourism industry through measures aimed at doubling the number of foreign cruise ships and tourists stopping over at Korean ports by 2011.

Under the proposed plan, the government will build docks at six major trade ports by 2020 that it hopes will attract leading cruise ship operators. The ports are located in Jeju, Incheon, Busan and Mokpo.

The government will also reduce usage fees for foreign cruise ships coming into the nation's ports, while encouraging the development of tourism programs that feature Korean traditional culture.

Last year, 67 foreign cruise ships stopped at Korean ports with 34-thousand tourists.
