Busan continues to reinvent its image

Busan is being re-born as a design-oriented city.

Busan ismaking the streets in Gwangbokno walking areas by cleaning signboards, providing more street lights and making murals on the dark walls of surrounding factories. In this style, the city environment is being revamped.

Busan City's ambitious effort to makestreets that people want to walk around and linger is bearing fruit. One of the most successful cases is a road maintenance project for Gwangbokno. Last year, Busan coordinated the size and color of signboards in Gwangbokno, and changed the sidewalks to be more environmentally friendly.

This has become a symbol of Busan and has made Busan a benchmark city for design. A culture-oriented street in Daehakno, Nam-gu District, specialized streets in Seomyeon, Busanjin-gu District, mural paintings in Anchangmaeul, Beomil 6-dong, Dong-gu District and in Sasang Industrial Complex in Sasang-gu District, have gained popularity among citizens and enhanced Busan's competitiveness.

In terms of policies on construction, industry, functions and efficiency, Busan has put an emphasis on design-specific city management that is centered around cultural spaces and content that express the essence of Busan in an effort to make Busan a design-oriented city. In 2007, Busan established a team to develop the city skyline in the department of construction and housing.
