Busan Port reclaimed last year Korea's top spot in terms of the total value of import and export cargo handled, overtaking Incheon International Airport. According to Busan Customs on Monday, Busan Port handled US$179.5 billion in import and exports last year, while Incheon Airport recorded $168.1 billion. Busan had been second to Incheon in the category since 2004.

Busan Port’s success is attributed to greater increases in the export of machinery and precision equipment (33.3 percent), steel and metal products (20.9 percent) and ships (24.7%), while the airport's exports of semiconductors were up only 10.8 percent and its exports of wireless communication products were down 12 percent. Busan Port handled $99.7 billion worth of exports and $79.8 billion in imports.

Incheon International Airport handled $87.7 billion worth of exports and $80.4 billion in imports. More exports were handled by Busan, while more imports were handled by Incheon. The total national export volume last year was $325.5 billion, breaking the $300 billion mark and ranking 11th in the world. Of the total export volume, Busan Port handled 30.7 percent and Incheon International Airport handled 27 percent.
