Vice minister Kim Young-nam of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) officially proposed Wednesday that the 2011 congress of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) be held in Busan.

He made the proposal at the fifth Asia-Oceania meeting of the IAPH which is being held at the Paradise Hotel Busan from March 16 to 19.

"The holding of the event in 2011 in this city would coincide the opening of Busan New Port, which could offer an excellent opportunity to publicize the new port abroad," said the vice minister.

The congress of the IAPH is held every other year, and the venue for the next general assembly is determined four years in advance. In other words, the venue for the 2011 meeting will be announced at a congress slated for 2007 in Houston, the U.S., explained an IAPH official.
