Busan City successfully hosted the International Water Association's World Water Congress & Exhibition 2012 earlier this year, from September 16-21, as the biggest conference in the IWA's history, with the participation of about 7,100 water related professionals from 130 countries. As a follow-up project, the IWA Northeast Asia Regional Office will soon be established in Busan.

Busan City Mayor Hur Nam-sik and IWA Executive Director Paul Reiter signed an agreement on November 21 at Busan City Hall to establish the IWA Northeast Asia Regional Office in Busan. Under the name of the IWA, the regional office will be committed to facilitating networking activities among IWA members, universities and government research centers, and will host water-related forums and seminars. Therefore, Busan City expects to be able to globalize our water industries through the IWA’s future activities here in Busan.

A city official said, “We will make our best effort for the IWA Northeast Asia Regional Office to become a hub of the water industry in Northeast Asia by expanding its role as a global R&D center in cooperation with existing water-related institutions.

The IWA Headquarters are located in central London, which is also the home-base for its publishing group. Meanwhile, as well as being the location of its executive office, The Hague in the Netherlands is the home-base for the majority of the IWA’s operations.
Regional offices are located in five locations including Singapore, Beijing (China), Nairobi (Africa), Bucharest (Europe) and Washington D.C. (North America). This year, plans for two more regional offices in Busan and Peru have been announced.
