Tree-planting projects and more bike lanes will add to the area’s allure

Busan has been actively promoting a “Green Busan” movement, following a path set by the city’s officials to make the city more environmentally friendly.

A green zone will be created for both leisure and health activities, which will transform the city into a more harmonious, healthy and enjoyable place enhanced by its ties with nature. Other proposals for a “Green Busan”, which are essential to become an advanced city, include developing several additional green areas, such as a Green Hill, a Green Town and a Green Bay, underscoring local efforts to enhance the quality of life in Busan. Trees will be planted and woodlands will be created for the community to enjoy. The benefits are twofold: residents can live healthier lives, and the city can help support the environment for future generations.

The global village is currently suffering from a host of serious environmental problems, including global warming, water shortage, desertification and droughts. Korea itself has recently witnessed some of the highest temperatures recorded here in the past century.

The city’s green efforts will quickly and effectively act for the wellbeing of the community, making the environment healthier for future generations and establishing an infrastructure on which to build.

The efforts include creating a large forest in the center of the city and woodland areas, tree gardens, green way and bicycle lanes. Plans also call for additional tree-planting projects aimed at businesses. “The success of Green Busan will be the result of the active participation of the citizens,” Busan City Mayor Hur Nam-sik said.
