It’s that time of year again, when Busan transforms literally overnight into a city filled with celebrations. August is the month for festivals here, and this year is no different. Come down to the beach to enjoy magic, some hard-core rock and many other activities and events.
Celebrating its 14th year, the Busan Sea Festival is essentially a big beach bash held from Aug. 1 to 9. It is one of the city’s signature summer festivals, offering a jam-packed schedule of 38 events lumped into six categories. There will be performances by top Korean singers, an international hip-hop festival, sports competitions on the ocean, an ice-carving event and yachting and boating races.
If music is your thing, then the Busan International Rock Festival is a must-see. Representing some of the best Asian rock, the festival will be held from Aug. 7 to 9 at an outdoor stage on Dadaepo Beach. The event - now in its ninth year - is a showcase for modern and hard rock music. And there’s even more to celebrate this year, as the festival stretches three days instead of two like in the past.
That means more music. Thirty-five bands from five countries will participate. Notable bands include English electric punk band Robots in Disguise, the Canadian love rock band Scatterheart, Keitaku from Japan and YB from Korea.
Those with an interest in sleight of hand should stop by the Busan International Magic Festival from Aug. 5 to 9. The opening celebration will be held at a special outdoor stage erected at Haeundae Beach, while the main shows after that will be held at KBS Hall in Busan.
Recognized as Asian’s largest magic festival, 50 magicians from 10 countries will perform at the event, dubbed “Fun, Fun Magic.”
A group of world-class magicians will also gather for a gala, and there will be a comic magic show for families to enjoy as well as numerous lectures on the art of magic.
If you’re not tuckered out at this point, you can mosey on over to the 4th Busan International Kid’s Film Festival. The movie festival will be held at the Busan MBC Art Hall, the Lotte Cinema Centum City branch and the Community Media Center from Aug. 14 to 18. The festival - held this year under the motto “Kids all over the globe, My friends all over the world” - will show 105 children’s films from 26 countries.
