Busan’s
largest multicultural festival, the Global Gathering, now in its 10th year,
will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Song Sang-hyeon Square.
There
will be no shortage of festivities: Various ethnic dishes will be on offer and
performers from Korea’s sister-cities will take to the stage.
This
multicultural blowout, hosted by Busan City and the Busan Foundation for
International Activities (BFIA), aims to expand understanding among different
cultures by running varieties of cultural booths.
This
year’s festival also sees the number of participating countries increase, and
invitations have been extended to representatives from diplomatic offices in
Seoul, its cultural centers and international exchange organizations.
An
opening parade that includes more than 90 organizations from 28 nations will
kick-start the event. It is expected that 30,000 citizens, foreign residents
and tourists will attend.
Ethnic
music and performances will be presented by people from Korea and Busan’s
international sister and friendship cities. Markets and global promotional
halls will also stay open to participants and viewers.
Visitors
may check out the booths selling ethnic food and goods - undoubtedly a
highlight of the festival. They can also revel in traditional games and
activities unique to each country.
A
town meeting, under the slogan "Foreigner-Friendly Busan," will also
feature a question-and-answer session with the Busan mayor and representatives
from foreign communities.
Busan
City will run a media booth offering newspapers in English, Japanese and
Chinese. Locals and foreigners who visit the booth can receive the latest
newspaper and sign up for subscription. Raffles are also included.
"The
10th Global Gathering is a global fest where different cultures across the
world meet in one place," said a BFIA associate. "We anticipate many
foreigners and citizens will participate and enjoy unique cultural performances
at the venue."
Last
year, 90 organizations from 27 nations joined the event, which was attended by
some 30,000 people.
