Busan has been selected as the venue for the 'International Astronomical Union General Assembly (IAUGA) 2021', the biggest international astronomy symposium in the world, to take place six years from now. IAUFA attracts some 3,000 scholars from 90 different nations for 12 days, and has held a Symposium every 3 years since 1922. Busan City Government, the Korea Tourism Organization, Busan Tourism Organization, BEXCO and others have carried out marketing activities jointly to attract this event here, and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, as well as the Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute, have also supported these efforts.
Busan expects the event not only to bring in economic effects of over 29 billion won but also to introduce the members of the Symposium to enterprises related to shipbuilding, optics, electronics and precision machines, thereby enhancing the city's image as a city of science, culture and conventions.
